When we first decided to bring some goats to our small homestead, I knew next to nothing about what I was looking for and more or less bought the first goats offered to me. While all the rest have since moved on to new farms, Ruby has consistently made the cut to stay. Not only has she been the best producer every year she's been here, but she's also the sweetest and most well mannered doe. This girl will let me do absolutely anything and everything to her, and is always the doe I put up on the stand to train new people to milk or let kids have a stab at it.
One day I would like to do milk testing, and I have no doubt she would easily earn her star. On only once a day milking and on a diet of grass hay, pasture, and grain (on the stand, only), she peaked at 2.8lbs in her 3rd lactation. Due to her soft dairy skin and nice medial, her udder is easy to grip and hand milk, and she milks down to nothing. She does equally well on the milk machine when it is used by my farm sitters (I, personally, prefer to hand milk). She holds this lactation all the way through pregnancy and is only dried up a month or two before kidding, still milking over a pound. She also doesn't lose condition despite milking so well, something I really value on a homestead, and has excellent worm resistance.
Conformation- wise, I LOVE her depth of body. She's by far got the best depth of body in my small herd, and it's something I'd like to see throughout. Her front legs are well placed beneath her withers and she has fantastic brisket extension. Her rump is long and she is level when walking. She also has excellent width and levelness thurl to thurl.
She is sired by Cedar View Rialto *B, whose granddam SG Cedar View Fiorina 2*M VEVE89 milked 1581lbs in 2019 (88lbs butterfat, 64lbs protein) and has won several Silver and Gold JUJU awards throughout her life. His dam, Cedar View Evita 3*M has also won the Silver JUJU Award at 853lbs milk, 55lbs fat, and 36lbs protein.
Ruby's dam is JNR Homestead Dolly, the full sister to SG JNR Homestead Ruth 1*M VEEV89 of Wings & Caprines Dairy Goats.
